Name: Li Kuugo
Canon: Live a Live
Canon Point: Post-canon
Canon reference: An LP of the Kung Fu chapter
Details: Sound of mind, of body, of spirit. One who is connected to the flow of energy, to the spiritual and physical aspects of the world. Able to think rationally and coolly, but react decisively and directly. These are the sort of characteristics a martial arts master should possess.
Li Kuugo is... none of these things, but gosh darn it, she's trying her hardest.
In all seriousness, Li is possibly the LEAST qualified person to be a martial arts master. This is not because of her gender, of course, although she does have a complex regarding it, and certainly has the books stacked against her as a poor young woman in Historical China. (Ironically, she is the LEAST feminine of the potential heirs to Xin Shan Quan.) Her primary flaw is her aggressiveness: she's brash, prone to picking fights at the drop of a hat, violent, and constantly trying to prove she's not just some weak woman. Of the three, she's the only one to combat the Master directly and the only one who, regardless of who the heir is, goes out fighting. Not exactly classical martial arts master fare.
That said, she wouldn't have been a candidate if the Master didn't see SOMETHING in her, and what he sees in her is, as he puts it, "a heart as warm as the sun." Li's aggressiveness is as much a part of her passion as it is of her poor upbringing. She throws herself into things because she wants to be the best, because she wants to be someone who can be self-sufficient and beat anybody who crosses her. At first, it comes out of envy, out of a desire to have what she does not whether that's riches or fighting prowess. The Master, however, teaches her that she can only gain what she wants through hard work, and over time she comes to embrace this. In short, everything she does is out of a deep desire to succeed, which the Master saw as potential.
Li has surpassed her Master in strength and technique, in no small part due to the trial by fire she experienced when the Demon King Odio kidnapped her and brought her to his realm. The incident taught her a lot about what she had truly gained from the Master, but it also brought a grim reminder from the mouth of the Demon King himself: that demon kings can be born in any time and age so long as hatred exists. Thus, she has even further reason to hone her mind and body - to ensure that she herself never falls victim to the same flaws that doomed Odio. She knows she probably cannot display the same level of kindness as her Master, but she will do everything in her power to be as close to his level of greatness as a human being. But, well, she is also a human being, so she still slips more than she probably should. This just motivates her to try harder next time.
Memory Loss Level: Total
Allow Painful Regains? No
Regains:
I'll Be Stronger Than Them All (Memory)
She stays in a ramshackle shelter alone. Her mother died years ago in an assault. She knows that to try to seek aid is to invite the possibility of falling into a much worse life, being a poor girl. But there's a hole in a nearby wall where she can watch students of Five Animal Kung Fu learning their moves. Knowing they'd never take a girl like her, but also wanting to be stronger than them, she teaches herself the moves. Over the next few years, she manages to pick up a rudimentary style of her own.
The Rich and the Poor (Memory)
Envious of the rich and the well-fed, Li tries to hold up a merchant on the road using her skills. It does not end well for her; she manages to escape barely with her life, but not before one of the caravan soldiers carves a deep X into her face to teach her a lesson and to render her "worthless." Soon after, she relocates to a new base for herself in a bamboo forest, where she finds the ticket to success: mugging people who look well-to-do and make the mistake of coming into the bamboo forest, then reminding them when they lose that they'd have to admit to losing to a girl if they report her. Nobody ever does. Her sex is finally coming into handy.
An Easy Mark? (Memory)
Pickings have been slim lately, what with the disease in Wong Town among other problems. So when an old man, seemingly unarmed, comes wandering into the forest looking for healing herbs, he seems like an easy mark... until he takes her down before she can even register what happened. Weirder yet, he then invites her to learn kung fu! His mistake - she's gonna let him teach her, and then she's gonna kick his ass properly!
Easy Days of Kung Fu (Memory)
The months pass. The old man teaches her, a young boy named Yuan Jou, and a rotund young man named Sammo Hakka his art of Xin Shan Quan. Over time, she finds herself developing an affection for all of them despite herself. Well, she's STILL going to kick his ass, but this is the most care and affection she's experienced in a very, very long time...
The Dojo's Destruction (Memory)
*SPOILERS* One day while the old man is called to deal with a problem, members of a new school of Kung Fu, Yi Po Men, come to destroy their school. Li fights valiantly, with a desire to protect what's important, but is soundly beaten. She is woken later by the Master, only to find their school destroyed... and Yun and Sammo dead.
The Ultimate Move (Memory)
As Li and the Master pay their respects, he teachers her the ultimate move of Xin Shan Quan: Xuan Ya Lian Shan Quan, or "Whirlwind Fang."
Avenge Them (Memory)
*SPOILERS* Li quickly realizes something is up when the Master says he is departing to pray for the souls of the other students with a certain tone of voice. She moves quickly to cut him off in the Bamboo Forest and confront him about going to avenge the students on his own, demanding she take her with him. He agrees, and together the two storm the school of Yi Po Men.
The Successor (Memory)
*SPOILERS* After a ferocious battle with multiple skilled opponents, Li uses Xuan Ya Lian Shan Quan to deal a final, decisive blow to Yi Po Men's leader, the evil Odi Wang Li, sending him hurtling through his own chair before his body slams into the gong behind it. But the battle has a cost: the Master is nearing his end. He tells her that he believes that she can adequately pass on his skills, before telling her she has a "heart as warm as the sun" and not to lose it. Then, telling her that he will inform the others of her growth, he draws his last breath...
An Ending, Interrupted (Memory)
*SPOILERS* As Li ponders her own growth and the future she intends to pursue in the name of her master, an ominous voice rings out from nowhere, inviting she who "gained motivation" to "learn the truth." Before she knows it, she is in a strange realm where visions of strange places flash in and out of existence. She wanders until, finding an entrance, she finds herself on a mountaintop next to a gravestone in a dead land. With no other options, she sets forth to try to figure out what the hell happened.
Odio, Demons, and Humanity (Memory)
*SPOILERS* After having met different people from different times - a ninja, a fighter, a psychic, a robot, a gunslinger, and a caveman - she and a group of the others confronts the one behind their abduction: a monster calling himself "Odio, King of Demons." Dissatisfied with Li's answer to his questions, he engages them in a ferocious battle that takes all of their strength to overcome. On victory, Odio reverts from his demonic form to his original, human form: that of a man in armor, injured and frustrated. He demands for her to kill him, but she refuses, walking away with the others. As they meet up with the other three abductees in a room filled with statues of their greatest enemies, Odio reappears, forcing them to refight their most important life battles. Stronger now, they win handily, and Odio demands to know what the difference is between them. Li, feeling true empathy for Odio in that moment, replies:
"You remind me so much of myself... I used to envy people the way you do! But... But that's wrong! Just because you want something doesn't mean you'll get it! But if you persevere, you will get what you want in the end, I think... So long as you do your best and don't give up, you'll succeed! Just don't give up... I... that's all I have to say..."
Her words remind Odio of his own life as a human and what he had thrown away in despair, and for a brief moment he understands. Informing them they will be returned to their times when he dies, he warns them that anybody can become a King of Demons so long as hatred exists before perishing, his body blown away as dust in the wind...
